This is one of the most hotly anticipated Chinese movies of the year and features megastars Ziyi Zhang and Leon Lai. The film is a biographical account of the iconic Peking Opera star Mei Lanfang, and cost over $15 million to make. Mei Lanfang was born in 1894 and is well known for his performances of female characters in Chinese Opera as well as helping to promote Peking Opera abroad. This film marks director Chen Kaige's return to Chinese Opera since the 1993 award-winning and controversial film 'Farewell my Concubine'.
