Following a number of high-profile reports detailing labour issues in Apple's supply chain, the company recently requested that the U.S. Fair Labor Association (FLA) conduct a special investigation and audit of its product suppliers, including the Foxconn (富士康) factories located in Shenzhen and Chengdu. Independent FLA inspections began Monday morning (February 13th) at the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, which is operated by Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. (鸿海精密集团), a Taiwanese manufacturing company. The inspectors are interviewing over a thousand Foxconn employees, with questions pertaining to long work hours, salaries, health and safety. The investigation team will also review the manufacturing area, staff quarters and other facilities, and write a comprehensive report. The results of the FLA investigation will be released in early March. Additional investigations will be conducted at suppliers Quantra and Pegatron later this spring. FLA's final assessment will cover over 90% of the factories where Apple products are assembled.
