On February 14th, the Korean Auto Industry Cooperative Association (KAICA) announced that in 2011, South Korea produced 4.65 million cars. This total represents an increase of 9 per cent over 2010, and kept South Korea placed as the fifth largest car producer in the world, a distinction it has held for the last seven years. China, with 18.41 million cars produced in 2011, maintains the top spot, which it has held for three consecutive years. Car production in the United States saw an increase of 11.7 per cent in 2011 to 8.64 million, claiming the second spot from Japan, who produced 8.39 million cars in 2011 and was bumped down to third place. Due to both increased domestic demand and exports, coming in fourth place, German car production increased by 6.7 per cent to 6.30 million. India ranked in sixth place with 3.94 million, followed by Brazil (3.41 million), Mexico (2.68 million), Spain (2.35 million) and France (2.28 million).
