Chengdu is a vital transportation hub for southwest China since it provides a passageway to western China including Tibet, Kunming, Yunnan Province and Qinghai. The city is easily reached by air and land.
Chengdu's International Airport is located 20 km outside of the city center. Currently, the airport is one of the busiest airports in the nation, with flights to many major domestic cities and international destinations.
As one of the largest rail hubs in southwest China, Chengdu has two railway stations and serves destinations in major cities in China including Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guangzhou, and Urumqi. Chengdu's road system is considered extremely advanced compared to its neighboring cities in south west China. Highways from Chengdu to Chongqing and Leshan have reduced much of the travel time and improved road infrastructure. Most of its expressways and highways radiate from the city center or ring roads that encircle the city.
Traveling within the city is facilitated by a well-developed ring road system and good public transport. A light rail system is under construction as a measure to control pollution and improve transport amenity.
