Also, what is up with dude's hair? Seriously? This guy is ruinign it for all teachers who just want to sleep with their students - don't want to complicate it with blackmail.

Chinese students often make up horrible stories to get their teachers fired. This has happened to me personally, three times. In each case, I was deemed guilty and immediately terminated without ever being afforded the chance to confront my accusers. The last time this happened, I was accused of having sex with a female Chinese student (unidentified) in the stairway between classes, by two female Chinese "witnesses" (also unidentified). Whenever I begin a new teaching position, I tell everyone involved--coworkers and students--that I will not have ANY kind of relationship with them outside of work. Sometimes, a vain student just cannot accept that their teachers don't want to f**k them. Sexual relationships between expat staff and Chinese students are frequent, to be sure. To those on the perceived wrong end of a break-up I have just one suggestion, "Get over it."

I gree with the first comment. Chinese girls should stop keeping entice their foreign teachers, let them live peacefully. I feel sympathy on that American guy, he is still young who sometimes couldn't control himself properly. Hopefully he gets lighter sentence. By the way, I am Chinese woman who really feel shame about some Chinese girls always wanna take advantage of sexcual stuff.

the fact is clear that the guy committed a crime by blackmailing some one with naked photo and asking for money, no matter who he is and where this happens it is a crime and he should be sentenced

Pretty shitty deal all around. Both parties took action that I think is pretty ridiculous but 3 years? Very harsh.

its the girl who offered money for her photos, not the American (based on the story), the guy is just asking the girl to retain their relationship, but the girl betrayed her pretended to give him money, of course everybody might be attempted to the offer, teaching job is not easy in China, (giving all efforts), then in the end the girl brought police, a pathetic for the foreign english teacher. Chinese girls as I have heard, once they were not satisfied to the relationship, they charged their foreign bfs coz this is their country, so whatever their voices is, its been heard. anyway, whatever the roots or purposes of each, this is a lessons for both parties.

Why so little time in jail. The court was lenient. He deserves the punishment and perhaps he will think twice about blackmail in the future.

Oh C'mon . . . He sleeps with her once and decides they're in a relationship? His obsession leads to blackmail via "sexting"? Both individuals sound pretty immature. Three years in a Chinese prison is a little extreme by US standards, but like the classic fool, he developed a false sense of security in a foreign land. I'd like to know where he was living . . . that shower looks amazing. Frankily, it looks like an advertisement and not at all like a photo taken from a phone. . . .

Give me a break!!!. You threaten a girl with blackmail and get caught??? You deserve more than three years!!!. I found, courted and married a Chinese girl, and we did this 5,000 miles away over a period of time. Have some respect and keep your "western ways" out of China.Learn the culture, study their traditions and learn the meaning of Honor. You are nothing more than an immature kid that is acting just like a spoilt brat he thinks he is entitled to a new trial for a less sentence? What gives you any rights?? You break the law and think you can tie up the legal system like you do in America. i hope you have your three square meals a day and all the sex you can handle, enjoy your next three years and then your flight home to the mother land.

It is a sad experience for young "John", I feel he would be put in jail in America also. His age and emotional state dictated his actions, he was hired for a position of professional integrity and and violated that rule....he should have controlled himself better. Americans need to respect the cultural society they travel to and leave bad habits home.
