Chinese Spring Festival Lover Leasing a Booming Business
eChinacities.com RepostIt's Spring Festival again, the most important holiday of the year for many Chinese, and single guys and gals are again faced with having to answer to parents about when they can be expected to marry. There's the additional issue of having to save face in front of friends and relatives who are wondering the same thing. For many, lover leasing – paying someone to pose as your significant other – seems to be the best way to kill both birds with one stone, and has become a popular and booming business.

In 2007, a Chinese film called Contract Lovers told the story of a young man renting a girlfriend to take home to his family for the Chinese New Year. In an instance of life imitating art, the practice of leasing a lover for the holiday has taken off in real life, and this year in China is no exception. There are numerous posts and threads on forums and BBS discussions about the subject online; some are renting and others are looking to rent themselves out as contract lovers for the holiday.
There are over 15,000 search results for the phrase "renting a boyfriend/girlfriend for Chinese New Year" on Baidu and over 28,000 on Google. Those looking to rent a partner this year appear to be very specific about what they're looking for in a rented lover. One of the ads reads:
Willing to pay 300 RMB a day for a girlfriend to take home with me for the Spring Festival
Time: February 11th to February 15th
Age: 25 to 30 years old
She gets to keep any lucky money relatives might give her, but she'll have to cooperate fully and not arouse suspicion...
Ms. Cai, another single young person looking to hire someone to play her boyfriend during the holiday, says that her contract lover must be "mature, stable, handsome, persuasive with words, educated, and with refined manners...And if he can match my standards for an ideal boyfriend, all the better."
In a college campus in Zhengzhou, "For Rent" personals can seen throughout the school. Female college students are particularly sought after. An ad posted by a female Shenzhen college student had 400 or more potential clients answer her personal within just two days.
In southern Chinese cities, contract lovers have truly become a profitable business. Even third party middlemen have entered into the booming market – a website in the city of Dongwan offers "professional" services, renting girlfriends for prices ranging from 300 to 2,000 RMB per day this holiday.
Public opinions of the matter are rather conflicted. Some people think that contract lovers are harmless white lies that will keep all parties happy, while others warn about lying to appease parents, putting a price tag on love, and going all out making it a commercial trade. What do you think? Sound off in the comment section below.

Terrible terrible method.
What happens when next spring festival comes? One's parents would have to be pretty dumb to not notice that the girl you bring home is different every year.
Eventually, the truth always comes out.
This kind of society drives young people to do crazy things. No wonder they all want to go abroad and never come back until their hair is already gray.

Just because most girls and boys are away from home on work, they live as their on way, with a feeling -enjoy life first. The concept for Mr./Mrs right among the girls and boys is strong and prerejudiced hence they could not accept/select one even after 7 years ( I write it because I know a case that after 7 years of friendship they separated finding not Mr or Mrs right each other). To change this situation parents also need to involve in selection of partners. Many of them wants to change and to find the preferred one. Actually distress /and disappointment among boys and girls for not getting their Mr/Mrs right is very high.

Wow! What kind of society are the parents forcing their children into that the outcome is for them to rent someone to pose as a soulmate?
I think the parents should let their children be and take things slowly to find their right partner because if they keep pushing them too hard in this manner to get married or finding spouse for them, that will lead to the increase in rate of divorcee in the near future.

IF this is just another 'real-wheel-turn' for the NEW CHINESE LIFE-STYLE... than China is in a much worse situation than I thought it was!
How can somebody be so bloody stupid to even think such thing?
Are the 'old' Chinese people that stupid, or its only their kids who are degenerating (mentally)?
It would never work in many places I visited (54 countries in all!)

At the age of 26 most of the world considers you to be adults, only in China are you considered a child. At this age you are supposed to have the maturity to handle the world and not do what mommy wants of you. From what I have seen here in China, it is not so much the desire of parents for their children to marry that drives this insanity, It is that they want a grandchild (preferably a boy).
With the increasing divorce rate is it any wonder especially women are choosing to stay single. The chinese government's own statistics say that over 75% of divorces are due to the husband cheating, And yet the parents continue to harass, cajole, embarrass and threaten their children into a loveless marriage to save face. When will this stop.
I say to the single men and women, there is a Mr/Mrs Right out there for you. Take your time and choose wisely who you want. After all it is you that will have to live with them.

The time has come for little Chinese boys & girls to stand up. Look beyond your parents and grandparent's dreams for you. They may think you terribly unconventional and ungrateful now, but in time they'll realize that you have independent thoughts, your own dreams, and the backbone to go after them. This face thing, ... it's a load.

Funny to be upset parents, first you kill the girls because their not men and now you place so much pressure on them to get married. Shame on you for doing this to those girls. Have not they been through enought

This is a totally understandbale phenomena here in China. The one-child policy forces parents to put additional pressure on their children to marry, so that in their old age they have a better chance of survival (with a pretty weak state social safety net).
The one child policy, along with deep-held cultural beliefs, is somewhat to blame for a huge gender disparity, with some 120 or more boys to girls country wide (not sure what the ratio is for this generation, as I presume this statistic is across the entire population, regardless of age group).
@Visitor, interesting point you make about cheating men here in China. Was talking to a Chinese professor here, who is quite young and liberal, and she was explaining how it is so accepted amongst men to cheat, that often a married man will bring his mistress to dinner/drinks with others to show her off. Back where I come from, if a maried friend did this, all his friends would ask him what the fk he is doing, and completely disaprove of his behaviour.
Anyway, I think renting a partner for the holidas is a completely Chinese thing to do. Everything here seems to be about keeping up appearances, and it is all about form, not substance. Lying to someone's face is really done so easily here, so doing something like this to your folks is a walk in the park.
Good luck to them. I might put myself up for rent next Spring Festival.

Its pretty interesting, pity though. I am afraid it may gradually become commercial then it will be devastating phenomena. Already girls in China are (if i am not misunderstood) many of them first look for House, Car and a good job from their boy friends or potential husband. There seems no concept of mutual earning and buying (making own) house and car. I am sure this is gonna be another blow to Chinese true lovers, hardworking guys (lover). Culturally Chinese were not like this, somehow the commercial life/policy of the country .........i don't know .......Its time to correct it and timely.
