Why should they? Should all the sellers of fake goods clear off too? Why shouldn't an African guy who can speak and write perfect English allow himself to earn a few bucks on the side? The system AINT perfect y'know!

That's right. I am personnally sorry for all people who come from Africa and can't find a English teaching job in China. Even China is moving forward quickly on Econimics and other fields, We need to behave in a better way in many aspects. I am a young generation of China and i wish things would be changed in the future.

With all due respect my friend, I have happened to notice that many non-native English teachers often happen to teach English better than us native speakers. Often when asked why we say something a certain way and asked for a specific grammatical explanation, many natives find themselves lost for words, as many schools in England for example don't spend a huge amount of time on grammar. So granted, a native can definitely offer something a non-native can, however the opposite is also true sometimes. My view? I couldn't care less, if they can get a job and someone is willing to pay them, go for it man, I will lose no sleep over it. Free world and all that....

I agree with you that non-natives can be great English teachers, as they tend to have a strong knowedge of the mechanics of the language, but there's one huge caveat. Their own English MUST be up to scratch in the first place.

I've met plenty of non native speakers who, while they have a good vocabulary, struggle with some of the core phonemes and make grammar mistakes. To be truly better than a native speaker, a non-native's speech must be at an advanced level.

Yes, people from Africa have their own mother tongues, which however they can't use to speak about any serious or academic subjects, since they were educated entirely in English (or French or Portuguese). At leat the Chinese have not been deprived of their own mother tongue by colonialism.

If you can find an illegal teaching position in China, it`s because there is a demand for it...

I would say high demand and also low availability of foreign teachers.

Low availability of qualified native speakers of English. That's why there is so much space for fake and incompetent teachers. :(

after reading this article, really i was surprise. china has the largest population in the world ,everybody know that. but the way chinses authourities handle the issue illegal foreigners are really unfair as if all chinese outside china are legal residing those countries. china has the largest illegal migrant all over the world.
there is no western country without illegal chinese residents or being illegally employed.
police will do their job really, but chinese authourity need to take things eassy with their foreign friends. chinese are too teritorial and these is there nature.
millions of illegal chinese migrant workers are all over the world too.
were there is a demand, there must be a supply.
so many chinese are not exposed, they think that there are no chinese illegal working in other parts the world.
look into the issue deeply and give reasonable and fair judgement. i became unhappy reading this article this afternnon, but china should not chase their friends from all over the world away. that somebody is illegally employed dose not mean that he is not qualified. so many chinese traveled out of china illegally, but today they are nationals of their host countries.
they where illegal for sometime , but today the are legal. how many foreigners are holding chinese passport or chinese identity?
{everythig in this world must not be legal} i quote. china should not spark enemity too. if the foreigners are doing good job , you should promote them and make things eassy for them too.
i dont support poor quality teachesr . you should also investigate there their qualities.
i am sorry to say this (chinese should remove teritorial lifestyle and embrace the world and people who intend to live in their land). thank you.

If you think the Chinese law enforcement officer is handling this issues badly, that's ok. I wanna correct one point of your opinion. It is nobody's nature of being this.

I would think that China would not want to be colonised by people that cannot
speak or write English properly.

I don't think there is anything else to add to the article other than .........if you are going to post comments on here, write them in proper English and get some respect

Patrick, for your information, colonize is American, colonise is English. I believe this article is about the teaching of English. (removes tongue from cheek).

haha! Thanks for that Ian. Whatever bro. I know several Aussie alcoholics and Canadians with fake diplomas. I don't think you can blindly judge where the majority of bad teachers are coming from. However, I think you might be right. There does seem to be a tendency for Chinese people to prefer American spoken English over British. But they all use British grammar and books. I'm getting off point here. The point is, where are the majority of foreign teachers in China actually from. If the majority are from the USA, then it would reasonably follow that there were more shoddy English teachers from that country.
