Lao Lang on I Can't Take You Anywhere: 6 Things Not To Do in China (32 comments) Feb 22

"It is common in other countries, besides China, to insult foreigners when it is believed they don't understand what is being said. I've played a bit of a game with my wife, who is Chinese, while visiting France. The waiter there was making very rude comments about my wife, while I translated them to her in Mandarin, acting as though we were engaged in our own conversation. When it had gone far enough, I let her loose on him, as I translated her Mandarin to French, again, just as though I was in conversation with the waiter. The shock on his face, as well as the surprise on the faces of other..." full comment>>

point no. 7 Ideas above their station: few people disagree that China does have one of the oldest known civilizations far outdating Europe. Few people expect it to be rammed down your throats at every opportunity to the point where 5000 years later it is as if China is on a par with the G8 nations. China is extrememley patriotic to the point where any form of...New full comment>>

I have to say that THIS is the UNDERSTATEMENT of this website let alone the year. "In many ways, China has yet to embrace political correctness." and there is nothing that makes my piss boild quicker than having some chinese person refer to me as a waiguoren or laiwai, even if it is established what country i am from. chinese does have names for nationalities...New full comment>>

I'm curious... When has getting angry ever improved a situation? Did it improve your blood pressure? When has embarrassing someone in front of others improved your relation with that person? I'm so glad the Army trained you well. I'm thinking they didn't train you for everyday encounters with the civilian populace. I'm retired Navy. I've also been well trained in empty...New full comment>>

Hi, just in case anyone was worried about getting this Jamie Shorter as a teacher, it's true he got deported so you don't have to worry. There's a detailed article on the Global Times website. I'd link it but not ssure if it's allowed. Anyway, he's no longer a threat to our chilldren, at least those of us in China.New full comment>>

My girlfriend and I (both Westerners) are constantly being asked when we're going to marry. We've joked about it a few times, but have decided not to do so any time soon. The only thing that halts the Chinese diatribe on marriage (in our experience) is saying how expensive it is, e.g, my gf pulled a figure out of her ass (60,000rmb), saying that's what a wedding costs back...New full comment>>

About joining up with a Chinese guided tour (9), it's not just on the Chinese tours that the "stop at 'the jade jewelry factory' or 'the perfume factory' for some sales pushy presentations". Same thing goes for the ones catered to foreign tourists. Except, possibly, as a foreign tourists you're more likely to pay more while getting a lower quality product.New full comment>>

As the Chinese hurtle headlong into rampant capitalism and materialism there is no surprise in this article. Parents have always wanted their children to marry into money, even "western" money. It used to be a "dowry" now a man is expected to buy a house for his brides parents. Witness to the rural male heading for the city to accumulate enough...New full comment>>

Short shorts are the norm here in DongBei as well. They just wear reinforced stockings, good to our normal daily 20 below temperatures. In summer they just abandon the leggings and wear lacy stockings or nothing at all. As other posters have implied "Britney Spears would be proud", and it doesn't matter the age at least up to 50.New full comment>>

An interesting article but of course has to be too generalised to avoid being long and boring. Attitudes have, of course, changed in all countries over the past 30 years, and more, but perhaps more significantly so in China than anywhere else. From my experience, one thing that has not changed is the pressure from parents to "marry before it is too late", and I...New full comment>>

Thank you for pointing this out. This article may reflect numbers of a small sample size of upper-class Beijingenese, but "inconsistent, illogical nonsense" is exactly how I feel about this article. Surely marriage in Beijing cannot traffic that much money, otherwise, there wouldn't be the millions of people who live there. Thanks Aussie!New full comment>>
