beard guy on "Decisions, Decisions: How Will China Position Itself in Asia (21 comments) May 24

when there are too many rats in one cage, the rats resort to homosexuality, suicide, and kiling eachother..... the heard needs to be thinned, world-wide -anyone up for a zombie plague? ....and to be quite honest after reading through that drivel i'm ashamed to be a member of the human race. I'd rather be a homosexual-suicidal murdering rat, thank you very much.New full comment>>

I worked in the very large finance office (30 staff) of an MNC in Shanghai. The FD was a man, all the other staff were good looking women with large breasts. There is a general shortage of such women in Shanghai, which suggests positive discrimination in recruitment.New full comment>>

Yes the IR laws are different here, yes I have a hot personal assistant, speaks fluent English. She was hired for looks and language skills. But she is useless as hell for any other job I give her. So she is very usefull on business trips. New full comment>>

I agree with this comment but not at all. If you are looking around, veery ugly chinese women or man have a job, so in my opinion this is not true . And I saw so many flight atendant also who are ugly. Ugly or beautiful doesn't mean that you must like them, peoples like different and they have different tastes, so if you fon't like a girl or man, the one who hire her or...New full comment>>

Chaching 's Reply to Comment "I don't agree with your comments completely. as for point..." May 24

fan, Bull freakin crap! They tried that already in developed nations and proven it to be absolutely false. Firemen is one example. If you are 5-feet tall but you can still carry a 250-pound load up a ladder, then you should get the job. Reception and sales positions do NOT require someone to be beautiful. I was a hiring manager for years back home. Trust me, I'd...New full comment>>

Han Han 's Reply to Comment "Under the heading Bok Choy she calls it baicai but baicai..." May 24

The photo IS bok choy - the Chinese name is 'you cai'. 'bai cai' is white cabbage, da bai cai is what we often call Chinese cabbage or Chinese leaf. Qing cai is the name for all green vegetables. Qin cai is celery. I have lived here for 11 years btw. New full comment>>

All this stuff is absolutely true. The sales team at the language school I work at is almost exclusively female and entirely incompetent, bar the least pretty one who is very diligent; the only guy on the team was employed through virtue of the then sales manager being his friend. He's useless too. We also had an American staff member on the teaching team, who was paid...New full comment>>

skyoung 's Reply to Comment " Why should chinese woman marry some white devil, you..." May 24

Wow, sounds like some foreign devil made your life miserable. This may be news to you, but we're not all crazy. And I've met a number of women (Chinese and foreign) who have had bad experiences with Chinese men. I've met a number of women who have had bad experiences with foreign men, here and abroad. It's not the race or the color, it's the character of the man (or woman)...New full comment>>

I don't use headphones, I run through the park, I eat jiaozi, baozi, noodles, street food, spicey food, my eyes and ears are wide open. I've been choked, pushed, hit, walked through the funkiest parts of town, and I'm still alive. Some foreigners live in the laowai bubble. Some swim in the ocean. There's a lot of China out there. Ignore the bubble. Live a little! Buy an...New full comment>>

Big fail on #6. Most people accept color photocopies of said passport in my experience. Copy the current visa page, copy the title page (the one with the photo), and your worries are over. Hell, in most cases, they simply ask for the number, which I have memorized. So I have often just rolled on by without it.. If they can look you up in the database, it checks; if it...New full comment>>

I cannot disagree with any of these points, as I believe this American gentleman (I presume that it is a guy who has written this, based on the expressions used). However, I cannot give personal experiences of the first two points, although I certainly had my suspicions regarding point 2, as I did believe that others in higher positions within the company where I worked were...New full comment>>

I realize I could exist on a much better level and be much more resourceful if I spoke and understood Chinese, but I am not willing to jump in the deep end and shatter the illusion I have of the Chinese people as being overwhelmingly nice people

Elrancho Flamefart on The Willing Mute: Why Many Expats Don't Speak Chinese(45 comments) Feb 10

"Well 3 years ago I came for six months to Ningbo. Quite unexpectedly I realized a complete freedom I had never known to exist: that of not knowing what anyone was saying. No one had the power to ruin my mindset by the trash coming out of their mouths. It was all music and background noise to me. It also made every initial interaction much more fun. More smiles and body language. Even if someone was making fun of me a quick smile followed with me saying Ni Hao or Ting bu dong, neutralized into laughter any slight. I also noted casually that there seemed to be 3 groups of Laowai in Starbucks at any one time. Without a doubt the only group not socializing and with anti social body language, headphones on , nose in a book were the teacher group who had learned Mandarin. I've seen this observation reiterated by other posters frequently in here. In my home country many times after taking public transportation and being a captive audience to what I would describe as Thug Speak (brute ignorance) and teen age Bimbo Speak, I'd get off bus feeling bothered. Worse yet, if I dare confront the abusive loud mouth bully, perhaps even a violent exchange would occur. Hence I disliked..." full comment>>
