Dalian has an excellent water transportation system that links the city with a number of destinations both at home and abroad, though it is not used as extensively as it was in the past. Those traveling by boat to any domestic or international destination should arrive at the port at least a half an hour before the scheduled departure time.

The deep-water port is free of ice and silt all year round, making it the most convenient seaport for the transshipment of cargoes between the Far East, South Asia, North America and Europe.
