Guangzhou Transport -Subway

Currently there are four operational metro lines in Guangzhou – lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 – with lines 5 and 6 under construction. It is expected that by 2010, Guangzhou's urban rail system will have a total of 9 lines, covering 255 km in total.

Subway Line 1 runs from Xilang in Fangcun District in southwest Guangzhou to the East Railway Station. The distance-based fare is RMB 2 to RMB 8

Line 2 runs from Jiangxia in Baiyun District to Pazhou in Haizhu District. The fare is RMB 2 to RMB 8. Both lines 1 and 2 are provide elevators that give access to platforms.

Extensions to Metro Lines 3 and 4 are currently under construction. Travelers are advised to check which sections are open, as this can change from day to day.

Metro operational hours are from 6:00 to 23:00 with some lines closing a bit earlier to allow for construction. To be on the safe side, expect the subway to conclude operations a little before 11:00 pm.

The ticket purchase system is quite different from other big Chinese cities. Guangzhou is equipped with automatic ticket machines that accept coins and paper money. In addition, the metro system accepts a stored-value card known as Yangchengtong. The Yangchengtong card can also be used on buses, in public phone booths and in 7-11 convenience stores, cinemas etc. The cards are valid in many areas including downtown Guangzhou, Zengcheng, Nanhai, Panyu and Foshan.

IC cards can be purchased at subway stations with a RMB 30 deposit, plus the cost of the stored value. An IC card usually requires a RMB deposit with the remaining used for fare.
