The Jing-Guang (Beijing-Guangzhou) Railway Line is the main transportation trunk line that links south and north China. Currently it links Beijing and Shenyang, Beijing and Chengde, Beijing and Baotou, Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan, Shijiazhuang and Dezhou, Lianyungang and Lanzhou, Hunan and Yunnan, Hunan and Guilin. In addition, Guangzhou-Maoming and Guangzhou-Shantou railways connect Guangzhou to the east and west. The express rail-line between Guangzhou and Hong Kong has 23 high-speed trains leaving Guangzhou, with another 8 direct-link high-speed trains arriving in Guangzhou from Kowloon every day.
The Yuehai Railway, which opened in 2004, links Guangzhou with Haikou (the capital of the island province of Hainan) via a train ferry across the Qiongzhou Strait. The train departs at 22:26 every day from Guangzhou, arriving 12 hours later at Haikou; fares range from RMB138 (hard seat) to RMB 400 (lower soft sleeper). An express line connecting Guangzhou with Lhasa, Tibet is now open. The 4,980 km journey takes 58 hours. Fares begin at RMB 869. Travelers interested in going to Lhasa are required to have appropriate travel paperwork before purchasing a ticket, and must deal through an authorized travel agent.
There are two major railway stations in Guangzhou. Guangzhou Railway Station is located on the Huanshi Xilu in the northern part of the city. Trains from this station head to Beijing (22hrs), Shanghai (23hrs), Chongqing (11hrs), Shenzhen (1.5hrs), and other major cities in China. Guangzhou East Railway Station is the second major railway station in Guangzhou. Currently, it offers routes to Hong Kong (55 minutes), Shenzhen and other popular tourist destinations.
Tickets can be purchased at many ticketing offices that are scattered around the city. Visitors can book train tickets 4 to 6 days in advance in booking lines. Booking lines are opened for business from 7:00 to 21:00.

Guangzhou New Railway Station
The New Railway Station is located in Zhongcun Village in Panyu. The station will be completed in 2007 and assume full-operation in 2008. The station will have four major railway lines that will travel to many cities in China.
