On February 4th at 10:19, a train on the Guangzhou Metro Line 2 at Xiaogang Station (萧岗站) bound for Jiahe (嘉禾) suffered a breakdown, causing trains headed in that direction to be delayed by about 15 minutes. The breakdown put two more trains behind schedule, forced three trains to unload their passengers prior to their destination and caused overall delays that day of about 7 minutes. The Guangzhou Metro authorities expressed that this breakdown, along with other recent breakdowns have been purely coincidental. The following is a list of other recent train breakdowns on the Guangzhou Metro:
- January 22nd (New Year's Eve) at 23:15, there was a signal failure at Gongyuanqian Station (公园前站). A total of 32 trains travelling both directions on the Line 1 were delayed.
- January 28th at around 08:00, there was a signal failure on the northern extension of the Line 3 between Jichangnan (机场南) and Gaozeng (高增区) Stations. All trains experienced varying degrees of delays, leading to many passengers in transit to the airport to miss their flights.
- January 29th at 16:50, there was another signal failure on the Line 1. Nine trains were delayed; the longest delay was 12 minutes 30 seconds.
