Nanjing Transport - Introduction

Nanjing is capital of East China's Jiangsu Province. Visitors come to the city to learn of its fascinating history, to enjoy its beautiful scenery, and to immerse themselves in its impressive culture.

Due to its geographical location on the bank of the Yangtze River, and close to the Grand Canal, Nanjing has long been considered one of the country's easiest cities to reach. Modern infrastructure, like state-of-the-art highways, railways and an airport, mean it is now accessible by - and has access to - the whole of China, Asia, and indeed, the world.

Three major trunk lines meet in Nanjing, making it one of the most important railway hubs in East China. Passenger rail services in Nanjing are provided mainly by Nanjing Railway Station and Nanjing West Railway Station.

As a regional transport hub, some 60 state and provincial highways snake out of Nanjing, providing a road link between it and the rest of China. Bus journeys along these world-class highways are quick and comfortable. The city has nine long-distance bus stations, the biggest of which is Zhongyangmen Nanjing Long Distance Bus Station.

Lukou International Airport (NKG) is located approximately 35km (21 miles) outside the city center. It serves airlines operating flights to and from many domestic and some (mostly Asian) international cities. And of course, being on the banks of the Yangtze River, the city would not be complete without a port. Travelers can take a ferry to and from nearby cities like Shanghai and Suzhou.

Getting around Nanjing is also very convenient. The city has an extensive bus network, a recently-opened subway line, and plenty of taxis.
