Line 1 travels north to south. Most of its 16 stations are underground. It covers a total distance of 17km (10.62 miles). The subway runs from 6:00-22:00, and fares depend on the distance traveled. Many of Nanjing’s places of interest are served by the subway.
Construction of Line 2 commenced in 2006, and will be partially operational in 2009. Line 2 will at that stage stretch 15 kilometers from Jiangxinzhou to Xianhomen via Xinjiekuo. When the line is completed, it will cover more than 43km.
Travelers visiting Nanjing for an extended period should purchase an IC (Jinlingtong) card - these can be used on the subway, public buses and ferries as well as in taxis. The cards are sold at various service centers around the city. When initially obtaining the card, users should leave a refundable deposit. They can top the card up at any of the service centers.
