Nanjing Railway Stations
Nanjing is a major transport hub for East China. It is the intersection of the National Jinghu (Beijing-Shanghai) Railway and Ningtong (Nanjing-Tongchuan) Railway. Trains run direct to major cities all over the country, including Beijing (approximately 10 hrs), Shanghai (2 hrs), Suzhou (2 hrs), Xi'an (13 hrs), Hangzhou (5.5 hrs), Tianjin, Harbin, Changchun and Shenyang.
The city has two operational train stations, namely Nanjing Railway Station and Nanjing West Railway Station, with another, Nanjing South Station, due to be completed in 2010.
Tickets can be purchased at any of the train stations as well as in a number of travel agents around the city. Tickets can be purchased five days in advance of the desired departure date. Tickets can also be booked at a hotel counter for an additional but often worthwhile fee of RMB 5-10.
The main station, Nanjing Railway Station is located in the northern suburbs, near Xuanwu Lake. All trains departing and passing through Nanjing, including those departing Nanjing West Railway Station, stop at this station. It also serves as a transfer junction.
Travelers arriving at any of Nanjing's railway stations can get to the city center by taxi for a fare of RMB 20-30. Buses serve Shanghai Lu (13), the university area, Xinjiekou (1A) and the city center. Those arriving at Nanjing West Railway Station are advised to travel to the city center by subway.
A Short Hop from Nanjing to Shanghai
Traveling between Nanjing and Shanghai by train takes approximately three hours. Trains for Shanghai depart both Nanjing Railway Station and Nanjing West Station. Tickets may be purchased at any of the 40 windows on the first floor of the Ticket Building at Nanjing Railway Station. Travelers are advised that the level of window service may differ depending on the season.
