Swap Qingdao’s outdoor breeze for a blast of the air-con at Qingdao’s cinemas, because this August not one but five American blockbuster movies are being screened. Sure, you can always buy them on DVD and save a couple of bucks, but then you’ll be missing out on that great cinematic experience: amazing sound, super large screen, 3D glasses and the smell of popcorn wafting through the air.

2) Smurfs – 3D (since Aug 10)
If you’re seeing blue this August, it may just be because the Smurfs are in town – in 3D! If you’ve ever wondered what would happen when these blue little creatures leave their magical world behind and enter the ‘real’ world (a.k.a. that of humans), then this film is made for you. Unleash that inner child in you and enjoy a bit of light-hearted fun on the silver screen. And did we mention it’s in 3D?

3) Season of the Witch (from Aug 19)
Get ready Nicholas Cage fan(s), the debonair actor has another movie coming to the Chinese silver screen. This time, Nicholas Cage plays a 14th century knight (complete with long manly hair) who agrees to transport a suspicious witch to a monastery, where, plot twist, monks deduce that her powers could be the source of the Black Plague. Aw, Snap! If you are looking for a way to spend a couple of air conditioned hours this week, then check this flick out when it comes to Qingdao on August 19th.

4) Source Code (from Aug 30)
For any one who saw Duncan Jones’s last film, the under appreciated 2009 release “Moon”, you already know that “Source Code” is probably going to be a bit of a head-trip. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the lead role of Captain Colter Stevens, who for reasons unknown, keeps on waking up in the body of an unknown man for the last eight minutes of his life, apparently set with the task by a super secret government project called “Source Code” to find and disarm a bomb on a train that already blew up. Like I said…it is a bit of a head-trip. Check it out in Qingdao on August 30th.

5) Cars 2 (from Aug 24)
This time around, things are going international! The next in a long line of Pixar’s seemingly spotless track record (pun intended) of animated films, Cars 2 picks up where the action of the first film left off, but this time substitutes the Americana of the first film for an international - action-spy-thriller motif. Parents and kids alike are sure to be entertained when this film opens in Qingdao on August 24th. And like seemingly every movie these days, it’s available in 3D!
