Suzhou is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China, and it is easily accessible by road, rail, air and sea, though most travelers to Suzhou stick to the first two. The highway network surrounding the city is extensive and well developed, and while the local airport is small and serves only local routes, there is a direct two-hour shuttle from Suzhou to Shanghai's nearby Hongqiao International Airport.
Suzhou is an important train terminus and daily routes to Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are offered. The new High Speed Train line has included Suzhou on the route, and the city is connected to Shanghai and Nanjing on this network. There is also a good network of long-distance bus routes: Shanghai, with departures every 20 minutes, is particularly well-served. Scenic cruises on the ancient Grand Canal are a popular option, and visitors interested in this should check out the trips on offer.

The city is fairly small and travel by taxi and buses is relatively easy, though the numerous smaller alleys and narrow roads can only be seen on foot or by bike, and are definitely not to be missed. Another option for short trips through Suzhou's narrow alleys is a pedicab ride, but remember: always agree on the fare before you start. Another scenic option is a water bus cruise along Suzhou's pretty canals.
