Urumqi covers an area of 13,787.6 square kilometers (5,323 square miles) with total population of 3.11 million (2010). The urban area is 399 square kilometers (64 square miles). Of the total resident population, 1,610,775 are males (51.75%), and 1,501,784 are females (48.25%). 49 distinct minority communities live in Urumqi, the largest of which are Han Chinese (74.91%), Uygurs (9.96%), Hui (7.82%) and Kazakhs (2.2%).
