Urumqi International Airport (URC) is the hinge for all major air-traffic in northwest China. International flights leave daily for destinations in Russia, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, including Tashkent, Novosibirsk, Moscow, Islamabad, Almaty and Bishkek. Internal flights also leave here daily: in total they service 53 destinations in China, including Beijing (3.5hrs), Shanghai (5.5hrs), Xian (3.5hrs), Chengdu (3hrs), Lanzhou (2hrs), Dunhuang (1.5hrs), Harbin (1.5hrs), Guangzhou (4.5hrs) and Qingdao (5.5hrs) .
Urumqi International Airport was recently granted the ability to issue visas, meaning that urgent entry visas can be obtained by foreign nationals (though if you intend to take advantage of this you must prepare your documentation and invitation letter in advance to make certain that you satisfy the entry requirements).
Shuttle buses leave from downtown areas to the airport, but public buses 27 and 51 will take you for a mere RMB 1. Expect to pay about RMB 40 if you choose to travel between the city and the airport by taxi. The airport is situated about 17 km northwest of Urumqi center.

To the airport:
Departure place: Kempinski Hotel
Time: for most of the year, the first bus leaves for the airport at 6.30am, departing from the Kempinski Hotel in Urumqi City every half hour until 8am when the frequency drops to every hour. The last bus leaves at 11pm. In winter the schedule is shortened by an hour at either end: the first bus leaves at 7.30am, the last at 10pm.
