Urumqi Transport - Train

The Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway stops at Urumqi Railway Station, connecting Urumqi to six major Chinese cities, including Beijing (45hrs), Shanghai (48 hrs), Lanzhou (25 hrs), Hankou (44 hrs) Chengdu (54 hrs), Zhengzhou (47 hrs), Chongqing (57 hrs), and Jinan (57 hrs). Once a week, there is also a train to Almaty in Kazakhstan (32-48 hrs). Train services in China are surprisingly comfortable but it' s advisable to spend extra to secure a sleeper in order to avoid the torture that is an overnight journey on a hard-seat. Tickets can be bought up to 7 days in advance from the station or through a multitude of agencies in the city. They often sell out early: do not expect to secure a seat on the day of departure.
