For those who’ve heard one too many cheesy pop tunes in a KTV parlour and think they might punch someone in the face if they hear another track by SHE, there’s always the sanity-saving option of checking out a live music performance in Xi’an. While many of September’s gigs have yet to be announced, here’s a little appetizer of what’s in store this month (in no specific order).

1) Folk Concert with Cigar Band (雪茄烟乐队)
The 80’s and 90’s in China may be known as the rock and punk generations, but there’s no doubt that Chinese folk has been significantly gaining momentum since the late 2000’s. Musicians like Xiao He and Zhou Yunpeng have followers across this vast nation and many folk musicians are now seeing their regular small-bar performance venues swapped for large concert halls. Such is the case with Xuejiayan or Cigar Band, as it roughly translates. Famous Chinese musician Zhang Chu is the brain behind this band. One of the most prominent figures in China’s early rock scene, it’s not surprising that this gig, which takes place at the Xi’an Concert Hall, is getting a lot of attention. If you want to see one of the most revered Chinese musicians up-close and personal, then make sure you drag your ass over to the concert hall on the 24th. Tickets cost between 50 and 200 kuai, not cheap you may say, but this is money well-spent, especially if you’re a supporter of the Chinese music scene. Wang Jianfang and Ma Fei support.
When: September 24th, 19:30
Where: Xi’an Concert Hall
How much: 50/100/150/200 RMB

Check out their sound here. Put on your studded leather jackets and biker boots, and get ready to rock!

Tamas Wells’ music has been described as “Nick Drake meets Sigur Ros” – a great combination if you ask us. Having toured to packed audiences several times in Australia, China, Japan and Singapore, Tamas will perform songs from his critically acclaimed new album Thirty People Away.
