The total area of Xining is 7,649 square kilometers: the urbanised area covers around 380 square kilometers. The city has a population of 2.2 million, of which 1.4 million live in urban areas. Males account for a population of 1,136,779 (51.47%) and females account for a population of 1,071,929 (48.53%). A complex mix of nationalities live in the city, which has around 35 distinct ethnic groups, the largest of which are Hui, Tibetan, Sala, Mongol, Manchu, Dongxiang and Zhuang.
