Xining airport (formerly known as Xining Caojiabao Airport) is located 29 kilometers (18 miles) from the city center. Domestic flights leave daily to Beijing (2 hrs), Shanghai (4hrs), Shenzhen (4hrs), Xi'an (1hr) and Chengdu (1.5 hrs), and less regular scheduled flights also depart from here to many cities including Guangzhou (4.5hrs), Lhasa (2hrs) and Golmud (1 hr). At this time, no international flights operate out of Xining, although the airport has recently been certified to operate internationally.
A shuttle bus to the airport (RMB 21) departs from the booking office of Civil Aviation in Bayilu and takes about 40 minutes to reach the airport. Alternatively a taxi will take you from the city center for around RMB100, taking about half an hour,
It is worth noting that non-Chinese Nationals cannot buy a single ticket to Lhasa from Xining, and must instead travel with an approved travel agency, after first securing a ''Tibet Permit''
